Bio cellulose is a biopolymer produced by the Acetobacter xylinum bacterium.It is not a cell wall substance, but rather an exocellular secretion substance produced by the bacteria. It is chemically identical to plant cellulose,which is made of D-glucosein the form of β-1,4 glycosidic bonds. The bacterial cellulose fibers form a three dimensional network through hydrogen bonds.Unlike plant cellulose,bacterial cellulose is made of pure cellulose without lignin,hemicellulose and other polysaccharide impurity. Bacterial cellulose contains a large number of hydroxyl groups on its surfacemaking it extremely hydrophilic. It is capable of absorbing alarge amount of water approximately 300 times of its weight! The bacterial cellulose gel is a harmonious combination of fine bacterial cellulose and water.
